Hum Paanch clocks 30: Ektaa R Kapoor reminisces about her first comedy show; says, “Things I did when I was 19”

The iconic Indian sitcom Hum Paanch recently celebrated its 30th anniversary. Produced by Ektaa R Kapoor under Balaji Telefilms, the show first aired in 1995 and quickly became a beloved comedy series in India. It centered around Anand Mathur (portrayed by Ashok Saraf), a middle-class man dealing with the humorous escapades of his five distinctive daughters—Meenakshi, Radhika, Sweety, Kajal, and Chhoti. Adding to the comedic elements was his late wife, who communicated with him through a portrait on the wall.

Reflecting on this milestone, Ektaa R Kapoor shared a heartfelt note on her social media, reminiscing about her journey as a young producer. She captioned her post, “Things I did when I was 19! Comedy came before drama.”

The series originally ran successfully until 1999 and later returned with a second season in 2005. It played a pivotal role in shaping Indian television comedy and established Ektaa R Kapoor as a formidable force in the entertainment industry.
