Gerard Butler on his return as Stoick the Vast in How To Train Your Dragon, “I’ve always seen myself as a guardian of this story”

Gerard Butler is indeed reprising his beloved role as Stoick the Vast in the upcoming live-action adaptation of “How To Train Your Dragon.” He has expressed a deep personal connection to the franchise, stating, “I’ve always seen myself as a guardian of this story.”

Here’s more on his return:

Emotional Connection: Butler shared that for most of his acting career, he’s been a part of the “How To Train Your Dragon” project, watching it evolve. He emphasized that the story has “captivated generations with its emotional complexity, beauty, inspiration, heartbreak and thrills,” and that being part of this journey has felt like “belonging to a family.”
Reprising the Role: When director Dean DeBlois (who also helmed the animated trilogy) approached him about the live-action version, Butler described it as a “profound moment.” He felt the opportunity to return was both an “honor and a responsibility” to carry the heart of the original into this new medium.
Live-Action Experience: The live-action film, which reimagines the 2010 animated movie, brings the mythical world of Berk to life with real-world scenery, having been filmed in Northern Ireland. Butler even got to don a heavy, 90-pound costume for the role, which he said helped him “fully transform into Stoick.” He also believes the live-action version might be more frightening and immersive due to the visual impact of dragons in a live-action setting.
Cast and Release: The live-action “How To Train Your Dragon” stars Mason Thames as Hiccup and Nico Parker as Astrid. It is slated for release on June 13, 2025. A sequel to the live-action film has already been announced for June 11, 2027.
Dedication: Notably, the film is dedicated to Gerard Butler’s late mother, Margaret Butler, who passed away in February at the age of 81. Director Dean DeBlois dedicated the movie to her, a gesture that deeply touched Butler.
